Many things contribute to portraits being lifelike and convincing, and one of the first things we notice about people is their hair. Hair can also help to convey a person’s age group, character, personality, tastes, ethnicity and gender. So to create a lifelike portrait, you need to draw hair as accurately as possible, or at least to give a realistic impression, and to know what to leave in and what to omit. Often, especially with people who have long hair, this is the largest part of a portrait. The most important things to concentrate on when drawing the hair are:

• The overall shape.

• The direction of the hair, or its flow, which can be affected by style.

• Tone – where are the darkest and lightest areas?

• Texture – the general feel and appearance of the hair.

Depending on its length, texture, thickness, shape and colour, hair can completely alter the appearance of the face.
